A BRIGHT, NEW DREAM
²ÞÀ» ºñ´Â ¸¶À½

A tomorrow not worth a damn
My come without being dreamed,
But a tomorrow pregnant with a dream like a pearl that grows
(without my knowing or other’s knowing) from such a wound
as is made when a needle pierces a clam’s soft flesh?
that tomorrow does not come without having been a dream.

But friends!
Why don’t we offer a bowl of water drawn from the well at dawn,
When the full moon arises, March
And bid the god of these rivers and mountains
Bless us with one pearl-like dream!

Friends!
How about a dream such as this?
It’s this incredible dream
Of going up to the 155-mile cease-fire line,
Towards the East Sea where the sun rises,
Climbing till we reach the top of the mountain that overlooks the blue ocean.
There we take a shovel-full of northern earth which has mixed inextricably with National Army blood
And another shovel-full of southern earth in which Communist Army flesh as dissolved
And we lay them to rest in a double grave,
A grave which, no doubt, will
Become a place of pilgrimage for our 50 million people.
It’s a dream of eyes brimming with tears at the sight of that grave,
A dream that, as we turn our eyes about, squint with weeping,
All thing will appear just as they are:
Mountains as mountains, streams as streams, sky as sky, trees as trees, birds as birds, beasts as beasts,
   people as people.

But if not that,
How about a dream such as this?
It’s this incredible dream
Of the prudent and judicious all dying
And the young, unmarried man and woman alone remaining and going two by tow up to that grave
And presenting their marriage candles?
Of course, there must be a birch tree standing there?
It is a dream of intense love beneath the birch tree.
And then, it is a dream of having dreamed the fertility dream
of holding in your lap a dragon that has come shooting up out of the East Sea
and bearing a daughter
and of having dreamed a dream of being attacked by a golden eagle that comes flying in on the morning sunbeams and bearing a son.

But if not that,
How about a dream such as this?
It’s this incredible dream
Of a fountain springing from in front of that grave
And flowing on to the West Sea, to the West Sea,
While the aboriginal forest of the cease-fire line
Spreads out toward Manchuria, crossing the Amnok and Tuman Rivers,
Extends as far as Cheju Island, jumping across the Halleo Waterway.
It is dream of us all become woodland beasts romping over mountains and plains,
A dream of us become birds flying joyfully in the sky,
A dream of us become fish leaping and threading our way through the rivers and seas.

“We bid you, we bid you,
god of these rivers and mountains, we bid you please bless us with a bright, new dream,
a dream of freedom and peace.”
